I just need it to last a couple years and about 70,000 miles. I can only afford $2,000 as it will be a second car (I already own a Saturn Vue that I want to keep) that will be driven primarily by my neice for school. Anybody have any suggestions?

Here a few years ago I picked up a little Volkswagen Golf, for less than what you have to spend, at a car auction, open to public and used car dealers. It was in mechanically good condition. The body had a few spots. Got some good gas mileage out of it too.
Me being 6 ft tall found that car had a surprising amount of room.

Hated to see that car go. Got rear ended by a Ford Explorer doing 55 mph. The other driver never touched their brakes until point of contact. The amount of damage was to push the rear bumper in about a foot. The passenger compartment was untouched except for flying glass from the hatchback window. The one thing that kept my, then 7 year old son from being injured by the glass was his Bear costume.

My overall assessment of the Golf is it is a great little car. Plenty enough room, good on the gas. I had to add the accident survivor portion so you know the strength of that little car. But results may vary depending on the conditions.

I bought a Geo prizm a few years back for $1500 and I put 100,000 miles on that thing and had very little trouble with it. A great car for the money. They don't make those anymore, but if you can find one in good shape, you should buy it for her.

how about an older civic or a first generation saturn coupe?
you didn't say how old your niece is or how long she has been driving.
