How do you get motivated to do the things you know you need to do? I belong to a local fiction writers' critque group and our next meeting is on Tuesday. I need to get my butt in gear and write the critques, which I have been putting off for way to long, but I just can't seem to motivated enough to do it. I made it through 3 of the submissions but I'm just having a hard time critquing them. I'm also having a hard time getting through one of the other submissions and haven't even looked at the last one. It's not that I don't want to do it just having a hard time getting my mind to focus enough to get it done. The same thing has been happening with my own writing, just can't seem to get motivated to work on it. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get past this?

You could break everything into smaller steps. Some people benefit from making to do lists and setting deadlines or goals. I am not a list maker. Generally, if I have a deadline coming up, you might 'make' yourself work on it for a set period of time (15 minutes to 30 minutes) and then reward yourself with some tv time, computer time, music, chocolate, whatever makes you happy :) And then go back to work...when you allow yourself to take breaks...it should make it more bearable. I would suggest that as opposed to waiting till the very last minute and then having to get a whole lot of work done in just a few hours. Everyone is different. One of the things that helps me get done with work--stay on task--is to listen to music. This might be a distraction to some people. But for me silence is MORE of a distraction. I need music to keep me going, to encourage me, to lift my spirits, to stay happy as opposed to bored and miserable.

I suggest to relax yourself; have fun for a few hours and crack right into business, maybe if u have a few friends with u who can help you be motivated, you kno by doing their work with you as well. As far as writing comes that needs to be done naturally, that is your own phase and this whole thing is a phase itself. Your just in the wrong frame of thought, you'll find it. Just you kno get cracking.

The problem may be that you fail to see the value in critiquing these or simply don't think the value is worth your time.

Reconsider what value this group is to you and whether you want to continue it if the requirements are not worth it.

Go somewhere your computer is not. Take them to a coffeehouse or restaurant - I carried my last book all over town before it was finished.
