how do i identify the stars or planets in the sky,there names i mean?

I'm in Scotland and it's a clear sky and want to no what the stars/planets names are???

Go to a site called Heavens Above

It shows a star map and helps you see satellites etc.

You can get a thing called a Planisphere from bookshops; mine came from WH Smith and was only about £3 a few years back. It's a map of the sky with the stars on it, and it plots their positions for the next five years or so. You adjust it according to where you are, the date and the hour.

As for the planets, which change much more because of their orbits, the Daily Telegraph publishes the position of the planets on the first day of each month (I think, or the day before that), so it'll say something like 'Mars will be visible from 26th to 29th at midnight near to Orion's belt'.

Get yourself a little astronomy book ('The Observers' Guide to Space' or whatever) so you know how to recognise them. And binoculars! Orion's sword looks awesome through binoculars...

The names of the planets, in order from the sun, are : Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The stars are too numerous to name, however, but an astronomy (not astrology) book or website will be able to give you the names.

The nearest and brightest star to us is Sirius (the Dog Star).

The constellations (star groups) I can remember are Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, (Great Bear and Little Bear), and the Plough.
