I dont know if what I wrote is exactly what you're asking for, but here they are...

24,40 >>> 120 (you divide them by 2,2,2,3,5)
36,72 >>> 72 (2,2,2,3,3)
28,42 >>> 84 (2,2,3,7)

(the result is the product of these numbers)

M(24) = {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24}
M(40) = {1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20, 40

24=2^3*3 IIIIII 40=2^3*5 LCF = 2^3 *3*5 =120

36= 2^2*3^2 IIIII 72=2^3 *3^2 IIIIIII LCF = 2^3*3^2 =72

28=2^2*7 III 42 =2*3*7 IIII LCF = 2^2*3*7 =84

I am assuming that you mean a common factor other than 1.

24 and 40
Both are even numbers, so both have a factor of 2. You can't get much smaller than that, so the least common factor is 2.

36 and 72
Again, both are even numbers, so both have a factor of 2. Can't go smaller, so the least common factor is 2.

28 and 42
Again, both are even numbers. Least common factor is 2.
