Often, they say these odd and sometimes rude comments about him if they see his face on perhaps a poster or something. Being Italian, many mistake me for a White person (Which I don't consider myself) and I am always hearing one racist joke or another. I don't get it. Did I miss something? I really want to understand what is going on here.

Unfortunately my first guess wold be ignorance due to the fact that that make racist jokes. Maybe the feel intimidated by him, not understanding how serious the cause was he was fighting for. Unfortunately some people don't understand how serious the fight for equality was. Some still believe that America is a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" society and that the "American dream" still lives. In this idea, people create their own reality so if a person is poor the only reason is laziness. But, people fail to understand that society can create structures that keep people poor and that racism was just such a structure. MLK fought this. Anyone who doesn't understand this doesn't want to understand this. Maybe get new friends?

Onto your question: there a a lot of fools in the world. Ignorant fools don't look at the grand scheme of situations, ideas, or thoughts. They make quick decisions in their minds without thinking them through. They do not look at the bigger picture. In my humble opinion, spending time with a fool is foolish- you need not associate with them as they do nothing to lift up your own life and they probably have some weird satisfaction when they see a person who is above it all fall down. Leave the fools behind and realize their own ignorance- and that you need not be like them. Remember this, the people you hang around will rub off on you and you can pick up some of their gly traits. Hang around those who have good traits, that you benefit from your friends.

Martin Luther King was a great man who made some amazing changes in the world in which we live. He fought for civil rights of blacks and all colors. Jimmy Carter right now, with his new book, is boldly , in a way, doing the same thing for the Middle East. Men of greatness and good deeds deserve respect from all peoples.

You are an Italian which classified falls under the classification of a caucasion even tho we both have 'olive skin' tho I see no green in mine! Caucasions are sort of 'white', just as you say. They are of many different ethnicities. The color of skin only has to do with the color of your skin. Italian, like me as of Croation heritage, are both considered caucasion. Your ethnicity however is Italian as mine is Croation.

Because Martin Luther King Jr is synonymous with Black peoples' struggles to better themselves. Many people don't understand that he fought for freedom for all people who are oppressed. Not just Blacks. But because he was Black and his fight at the time was for racial equality, many people equate that with Black superiority and feel threatened. All races have their bad and good people, with I think most being good at heart.

Another reason is that many militant Blacks have used his name and photo to further their own self interests. They used him to try to push Black superiority. In fact, Martin Luther King Jr fought for equality for all races, not Black superiority. He was saddened by the hatred and injustices that were based solely on the color of people's skin.

The NAACP is also very militant about 'their' causes for Blacks and many high ranking people in that group have made blistering racial slurs against White people without being labled racist.

Unfortunately, as long as the human race feels the need for separation of any kind, there will never be peace or an end to racial problems.

Chin up - your friends are probably unaware this bothers you. Why not say something when it happens? You shouldn't be silent as it only prolongs the disease.

Speaking for myself, I feel had Martin Luther King presented himseld ONLY as an activist for racial equality I would not have a negative reaction to him. Problem is he presented himself as a man of God, a "reverend", and used this persona to advance the cause.

Martin Luther King was an adulterer who had many and sundry sexual relations outside of his marriage. He was anything but "reverend". He was a hypocrit (as we all are to some degree or another) but he attempted to place himself above others based upon his supposed religious convictions. I look negatively at him in exactly the same way I view other outspoken religious leaders who have lived a lie in the public arena. It is political correctness that has prevented the world from treating King with the same disgust as Mr. Haggard (I think that's how you spell his name) recently in his use of drugs and homosexuality. His being black has made him the "teflon" hypocrit. No one dares disparage him because he is associated with the racial equality movement.

Yeah its funny that way. I will often hear people say the "N" word during a conversation and then end it with I'm not prejudice or something like that. There is a dark side to human nature. I just wrote an answer to another question that asked about Christ by replying that God sent his greatest gift down to us and we crucified him. In a way, it is the same way with Martin L King Jr. He wanted peace and prosperity for everbody yet people crucify him. You have a great question but unfortunately there is no easy answer.

I have no idea. You could probably tell them that it offends you because you admire Dr. King.

Italian as we know it in the States usually isn't white--they're "Mediterranean" or "Latin" depending on where you go and "white" refers to Northern Europeans with light skin and hair. Many are of North African ancestry too, lots of Saracen Arab roots in the southern parts of Italy.

your white friend are in-the-closet bigots they really don't think much of a black person, they accept you because you are their genny-pig don't get confused that they really want to be your friend it is some thing they want from you. i never had a white friend that did not show their true colors after awhile, all them stick togather when it comes to black people we the ones that stray away from our own when we are in trouble with whites. it takes just a pin head of black blood to make you black

First off you are caucasian.

Second, I don't know why your "white" friends have a problem with MLK. My "white" non-racist educated friends have nothing but respect for MLK. MLK, in my opinion, is one of the greatest messengers of our country's history.

Did you think prejudice had disappeared from Earth?

MLK was a great leader but many whites are too racist to see that.

Because he has his own holiday, and no white man does...Do not count president's day...MLK was murdered, not assassinated, and to me, he was a great man, but he deserves no holiday.
