It is a gorgeous country town, right on the water. There are beaches nearby, as well as cliffs along the water with lovely walks. Castletownbere itself is quiet, with several pubs and if I remember correctly a few restuarants. It is in a good location for exploring West Cork, one of the most popular areas of Ireland for tourists. Skibereen is the nearest town, with a supermarket and lively nightlife. Bantry is also in the vicinity. West Cork has an abundance of wonderful restuarants to chose from. Annie's in Ballydehob is famous worldwide (word of advice - book your table now!) Mary Anne's in Castletownshend (a lovely little village) has great inexpensive "pub grub" or a more formal restuarant upstairs. Clonakility is another town worth checking out, with a great music scene. It has a famous trad pub, De Barra's with a rich history. Hope this helps!
