A polyphyletic taxon consists of some or all the descendants from more than one recent ancestor. But the paraphyletic taxon or group consists of only some (not all) descendants from a particular ancestor known. Thus simply polyphyletic means descendants from two or more recent ancestors, whereas paraphyletic means some but not all descendants from a particular recent ancestor.
