I think the conflict was how Arthur Dent leaned to cope with the end of his life as he knew it and the life he needed to learn to adapt to.

Additionally the main conflict could be identified that planet earth was destroyed five minutes before it provided the ultimate answer of life, the universe and everything.
The 2nd biggest problem/conflict in the book is that author douglas Adams missed too many publication deadlines. According to his notes after the fact, he had to submit the novel halted at the exact moment that Arthur, ford, trillian and zaphod escaped magrathea. This is the legendary planet where other planets are made. Here the four characters had learned the secrets of deep thought and the white mice on planet earth only to escape in the heart of gold just in time to have worked up an appetite.
If this book wasn't the first entry in a series, we would be very cross not knowing where the intrepid quartet found to have lunch, wouldn't we? Some of us enraged denizens of the milky way galaxy might have had to resort to the BBC radio series. This series was also titled, by an odd coincidence, the hitchikers guide to the galaxy, and by an even more staggering coincidence, also the work of one douglas Adams.
Improbable!

I think the main conflict is Dent with himself. He is an average person who's leading a very sad lonely life and then he finds himself thrown into the middle of something he never could have foreseen or concieved of and he has to find a way to deal not only with everything going on around him and in his head but also find a way to save earth from being blown up.
