A great book I've found is "List Your Self: Listmaking as the Way to Self-Discovery" by Ilene Segalove and Paul Bob Velick.

I like to make lists and this book has been great at helping me find myself!

Just go to the bookstore and get a blank journal. There are several kinds of entries that will work for you. One is to describe a significant event during the day and how you felt about it. An even better format is to focus on a challenge you dealt with and answer these questions:
- What happened?
- Why did you handle the situation the way you did?
- What were the consequences of handling it that way?
- What did you learn from this?
- What will you do differently in the future in a similar situation?
- What do you need to do now to prepare you for that?

Journals are just writing down what you feel, think, believe, etc. I don't think there are any criteria for writing one. Just whatever comes to mind at the moment.
