Bougainvillea do best if planted in full sun except in extremely hot areas where they should receive light shade. They can be grown in tubs and planters on decks, patios, and directly in the ground. Keep on the dry side during winter and when not actively growing. In winter, if in tubs, pots, or planters you may water approximately once per week in the cooler months (till around the end of March in Los Angeles) provided there is excellent drainage. They should never sit in water as they will drop leaves rapidly and die shortly thereafter. In the warmer months (as new leaves begin to develop) you may water 1-3 times per week allowing the soil to properly dry out to a moist but not bone-dry condition between waterings. Pruning is best performed in spring---mid to late March in Los Angeles. They bounce back quickly, and of course these plants bloom best on new wood, so don't be afraid to trim them. Fertilize with a good all-purpose fertilizer (everybody loves Miracle-Gro!) in spring and summer, and then as midsummer approaches CUT BACK on the amount of watering as this DIRECTLY affects the amount of blooms---in other words, LESS water during this time promotes better flowering! If you are growing these plants in containers and plan to transplant to a larger pot (or into the ground) be aware that the roots are HIGHLY SENSITIVE to disturbance as they do not form strong or compact root balls and the soil easily falls away from the roots when removed from their original container. To transplant (which you will in the future!) cut or remove the bottom of the existing pot (if it is plastic) making an additional cut from top to bottom on the side of same pot, and plant the entire pot into the new and larger tub. After you have placed and tamped down the new soil (to remove trapped oxygen which will dry out the roots) around the original pot, carefully slide the old pot up and out of the soil of the new pot. Water deeply afterward. Should your Bougainvillea produce long and leggy stems, be sure and prune them back to promote the secondary branching that will produce flowers, and, of course, provide the plant with support of some kind---trellis, etc. Regular pruning will produce better branching and more flowers. Please beware that these plants do produce some very nasty thorns! Have fun and enjoy your Bougainvillea!

No matter where you live, you do not need to over water it. Give it just enough water to keep the soil moist and when it looks dry, water it again. Maybe 2 to 3 days, maybe once a day depending on how hot and dry the air is at that time.

Please go back and add to your question, say if you live in an apartment, or is it planted in your yard, and how big is it, and I can tell you exactly how to water it!!! Thanks, Nature Girl.
