You need to get into the "queue" for an upgrade prior to leaving.
Call the airline and explain that you would like to get an upgrade that day if it is available and to have this noted on your reservation. You will still pay an upgrade fee and plus give miles.
The earlier you are in the queue, the better. If you are in the queue early enough, sometimes they will waive the processing fee (Normally $75.00), but you will still need to pay for the upgrade. Remember, Executive level frequent flyers get first priority over everyone so if you don't fly very often, you will have a tough time getting an upgrade. Executive level flyers are often upgraded automatically when coach is oversold. Call the day before you leave and ask about the availability of an upgrade and ask again when you check in. Also ask at the gate. Sometimes if a seat is available, they will call you up and complete the paperwork at the last minute (you will still pay).

Have a flight that is cancelled, or really horrible customer service. Go back to the ticket counter and complain and say you will miss your connecting flight because this flight is late and you will not make your connecting flight with a different airline ask to be sent on the next one direct. If it is full they will automatically upgrade.

Another way is to ask to be put on voluntary stand by. Then the next flight they will put you on might be first class if the rest is full

1. buy an upgrade
2. use miles to get an upgrade
3. ask at the check in counter - it's always worth a shot.
