I'm a junior doctor, living in hospital accommodation with 2 other people sharing a kitchen and living room. One of my flatmates keeps cooking fish (at least a couple of times a week) and it makes the whole flat stink for days. Personally, I hate fish and even the smell of it makes me feel physically sick, however I'm well aware of the fact that I can't expect her to stop eating fish just because of me!

So how can I best get rid of the smell from the flat? I've tried scented candles and various different air freshener sprays, but nothing seems to be able to overpower the smell of fish. I'd REALLY appreciate any advice on this!

Boil a saucepan with 50% water and vinegar on those fishy days

Keep a spray bottle handy with white vinegar and water to spray curtains carpets etc
( do not soak ,a light spray will be enough ,cut the fishy smell )

a cloth damped with white vinegar ,for dusting also freshens up a room .
All fishy saucepans plates and cutlery rinsed in vinegar +water , before putting in to the dish washer ,helps as well .

I hope you and your flat mate will remain friends,
and the fish odour will be kept to the minimum

Like the 'spray mister' approach to air freshening, pour some vinegar on a towel, then twirl the towel around your head around the house to freshen the air

Set a container (shallow bowl) of vinegar throughout the house to absorb unpleasant odors. Works great on burned food odors. Do not use styrofoam. It will soak thru it.

Warm a little vinegar on the stove when your roommate cooks fish or other strong smelling food. It will help get rid of the odor.

When frying fish, boil a tablesppoon of vinegar in the pan that is used to fry fish in, [after cooking the fish] and the smell will be gone from the pan

Everyone has their opinions 1, that fishy odor isn't normal at all. 2, yeast infections usually doesn't smell fishy. 3, bacteria infections and stds can cause this fishy odor. (bacterial vaginosis) Bacteria infections normally cause thin, milky discharge Also you should wash down there everyday with water and soap. Especially after sex or bubble baths What are the signs and symptoms of bacterial vaginosis? * a strong fishy smell, especially after sex * white or grey discharge * watery or foamy discharge Some cases are so mild that women don't know they have it. Signs and symptoms of trichomoniasis While trichomoniasis affects both women and men, symptoms are more common in women. Most men with trichomoniasis do not have any signs or symptoms. However, some men may have a temporary irritation inside the penis, mild discharge, or notice a slight burning after peeing (urinating) or ejaculating. Some women may have signs or symptoms which include: * discharge that is green, yellow or grey * a bad smell * itching in or around the vagina * pain during sex * pain when peeing (urinating).

Hi. try Dettol neutra-air, its a spray can, and boy does it get rid of those housie smells. (like when the cat Farts)
Also we use the same make and name but in an automatic battery operated gadget that you can set the various intervals we set our to every 36 minutes, its kills the smell from our neighbours cooking which would be unbearable without it.
At the moment sainsburys have the auto one on offer for about £6. It has to be set about 6ft(ish) high to get the best results'
Buy a refill at the same time as it will need replacing about every 6 weeks, and make sure that you get the neutra air, as the others are only odour fresheners. Good Luck

You shouldn't really be looking for an air freshener, but an odour neutraliser. There is a product called Eliminol from Jeyes Professional that we recommend for neutralising bad odours. We sell a lot to public houses where there have urine odour problems. I would also suggest that when your flatmate cooks fish, firstly she opens all windows in the kitchen and shuts the kitchen door before even preparing it. Thereafter, ensure that all pans used for cooking the fish are thoroughly washed and dried and doors and windows are left closed for a good hour thereafter. Malodours in a kitchen can often be eliminated by this simples process.

ask your flatmate to cook the fish in the oven so it contains the smell and afterwards put some fresh lemon & water in a dish and put this in the oven to clear the smell it does work but i would also complain about the smell and ask him/her to cut down the amount of times they have fish everyweek - it must be getting into your clothes and stuff - not nice! sounds a bit shellfish to me

And make sure everything that was used to cook it is cleaned right away, bones and skin wrapped and thrown out, orange peel or lemon peel in the garbage disposal after it was used for the fish,,,spray a cloth with lemon Pledge and wave it around the rooms...keep your bedroom door closed and cracks stuffed with cloth...
