It depends on the average length of the songs you store. Most songs are between 3 - 3 1/2 minutes. That means you should be able to store about 250 songs.

I can shove about 120 songs, exactly, onto my 512Mb MP3 player, so 1Gb is 512Mb times two, so about 240. 1Gb is 1024Mb, 2Gb is 2048Mb, and so on.

If you're dealing with high quality MP3's (CD Quality, 44100 Hertz, 128 bit sampling rate), like the one you download off of Itunes, Rhapsody, etc or the ones you rip yourself off of CDs, then the average song size is 3.5-5.5Mb ea.

What primarily varies the song size is the length of the song itself. A song of about 3:30 secs, will be around the 3.5Mb size and a longer song, about 4:30 to 5:00 will be more like 5Mb.

It all depends on the bitrate. I use lower bitrates. 48KBPS can give me around 800 songs on 1GB, 96KBPS can give me about 400 songs, 128KBPS can give me about 350 songs, 192KBPS can give me around 250 songs or so, and 320KBPS can give me about 150 songs or so. The best bitrates to use are either 96 or 128.
