When I start to record it stops because it says its copywright protected. Is there any way to get around this, all I want to use it for is for my own house, its not like I'm trying to sell it for profit or anything.

You have to buy the dvd. I've tried it and I had the same issue. Sorry can't help you.

All commercial VHS movies have Macrovision protection.
It used to be that PC video cards would ignore Macrovision protection, but this might have changed. (So try to loopback the video via a PC video card, it may take out the Macrovision)

However, you don't really want to copy those. They will look pretty bad. So, if you really like the movie, buy it in a used or new DVD

or you can use a MiniDV to pass the video through and then onto your PC.
