Air gaps are required by most codes for dishwashers. They are needed to prevent any possible cross-connection between your fresh water system and your sewage system. Without an air gap, there is always a chance (however slim) of siphoning contaminants from your sewage system into your drinking water system.
Sometimes, rather than having an air gap sitting on top of the kitchen sink, a plumber can rig it up underneath so that its hooked in to the garabge disposal. Its not "to code" necessarily, but it will work for the same purpose as a sink mounted air gap..

An aerator is thdevice on the tip of your faucet thet mixes air with your water before it comes out of the faucet. An aerator for a sink to go to the dishwasher would be used for a portable dishwasher that hooks to the sink and you use it then diconnect it and roll the dishwasher away until next time.
It is usually called a quick connect adapter.

Hi,When we bought a new dishwasher,They told us they had to put a overflow on our sink.I politely show them the front door.I'm not having that thing on my sink! Every time I saw someone Else's sink, that always looked dirty to me.No Thanks!I installed the washer myself with out a overflow, and it work's fine.Never had a problem with dirty water in the clean water. But I guess that's code.(not in my house!)By the way, It's to stop the dirty dishwasher water from backflowing into clean drinking water. If you drink tap water, which we use to cook with.
