This is a more profound question than you realize. On the very basid level all these things are magnetic settings on your hard drive. They are either "on" or "off". That is the binarary system. When you delete something, you actually do away with the computer's reference to it. The settings are still there. The only way that the stuff is really deleted is if something is "written" over the original magnetic settings. When the government deletes securtity stuff, they overwrite it about 7 times , I believe.

Doesn't actually go anywhere. When you "delete" something on the computer, it first moves the file to the directory called "recycle bin". When you delete things from the recycle bin, it removes the flag saying where the file is on the computer. The file is still there, but no longer seen in windows. When writing things to the harddrive (other files) the old "deleted" file will eventually get written over.

They stay on your hard drive. There are programs to undelete, like Microsoft Undelete. No file is erased unless you use McAfee Shredder or White Canyon (www.whitecanyon.com). I have the McAfee Shredder that was included with my McAfee Security Center. The Shredder is especially used for permanently deleting viruses and other harmful or malicious files.

It doesn't "go"anywhere really. If I understand it correctly, it just loses its allocated space on your storage medium. It doesn't really cease to exist until something else is assigned its former address (which is why some parts of it are always hanging around your hard drive awaiting forensic recovery). If you want to truely delete everything you'll need to do a bit scrub (writing ones and zeros to every bit of capacity on your storage medium. Any of you who are more tech savvy than I am are welcome to correct me.

It doesn't "go" anywhere. It is on the drive until it is overwritten. Deleting it merely frees up the pointer to the space on the drive.

Like when you delete e-mails from your inbox? Or shortcuts off of your desktop? They are deleted. They are gone.
