Your water pump is located on the front of then engine (against the passenger fender wall) It is hidden underneath the timing belt cover, and is driven by a the timing belt. You will have 8 to 10 small (1/2 in or so) bolts to remove to get the timing belt cover off, then you can have a look at the pump for any signs of problems. If you are going to remove it be VERY careful not to turn any of the notched or grooved pulleys while doing so, this will put the engine and valve train out of alligment and may result in a rather nasty suprise when you re-start it. Best thing to do is to use some whiteout(liquid paper) and mark the belt and pulleys before removing anything. that way you can be sure everything is lined up after you are done with the pump.

Be sure your electric fan is working properly. If that's working have some one, "Pontiac or Independent repair shop do an ACID cooling system clean. With your motor is cold remove the radiator cap, turn the engine on and wait at least 10 minutes and see if the coolant is circulating in the radiator. Your fan should be turning on and off also. If the water does not circulate after the car's been on for ten minutes something is wrong with your water pump. It's located on the end of the engine where all the pulleys are are. It can be found by eliminating everything else.Crankshaft, belt tension-er, air conditioner and alternator. Look for a large hose leading to the bottom of the radiator. That hose usually leads to the water pump. You may have to remove many front engine accessories to be able to remove the water pump.

are we just supposed to guess as to what engine you have? is it a big secret? how are we supposed to give any type of reasonably correct answer, when no info is given? if you have a 1.8 or 2.0 ohc engine, which is common on those 'birds, the water pump is inside the timing cover. rt side of engine.i dont think you have a water pump issue, unless its leaking. a leaking pump is not a cause of overheat, usually. i suspect you have a cracked head. these things are famous for that. but, hey; what do i know? i dont even know what engine you got.you could have a 2.2 engine, or even a 3.1

easy enough, a little logic is needed.follow the outflow at the botom of the radiator as it goes to the water jacket of the engine.the hose leads either directly to the pump or directly to the block.if it leads to the block, then the return to the radiator is right next to it and will lead to the pump.

the fan on the front of the engine usually connects directly to the water pump. if you need step by step try autozone.com or advanceautoparts.com. in the trouble shooting sections they have walk throughs for many engines and cars. or grab a haynes manual the haynes may take you a couple reads to understand but they are pretty good for that kind of stuff.
