how does a hearing aid work?

i know what it does and all...but i need 2 know like what exactrly makes it work...! can u please help me?

it has a small amplifier. its like a mic and a speaker, but its so tiny that's why they cost so much, The mic is facing out of the ear and the speaker inside.
