If x equals 5 that statement is false.

The absolute value of any number is that number expressed as a positive value. For example, the absolute value of 23 is 23 and the absolute value of -23 is still 23. Think of it as being the numerical distance from zero, without regard to direction.

The graph of absolute values, with the abscissa being the x value with and the ordinate being the absolute value of x would be a straight line with slope 1 and y-intercept of zero, and a straight line of slope -1, and y-intercept as zero. It would, then be "V" shaped, with the vertex at (0,0), and pointing downward.

The formulas you show don't mean much to me..I think you mistyped them. Together the show that x is BOTH = 1 (in the first) and X = 5 in the second..sorry.

By the way..if you have trouble remembering which is the abscissa and which is the ordinate, here is how I remember it (really): to become a Pope you must be ordinated, and we think of God as being "upward", so I make the connection and remember the ordinate of a graph is oriented "up" on a piece of paper. Silly? Of course, but it works.

I din't really like any of the first three explanations.

An absolute value equation actually represent two equations:

6=|x+5| represents

6 = x+5
so x = 1
and

6 = -(x+5) = -x-5
so x = -11

Notice that these are the two points that are both 6 units away from -5, one to the right and one to the left.

absolute value is how much the number equals without no matter what the sign.
for example the absolute value of -6 is 6 the absolute value of 6 is still 6.
that other question doesnt make sense to me becuase 1 times 5 equals 6 plus 51 equals 66

The absoulte value refers to the distance more than numbers. If a point is perp. 5 meters away from a line, there are two places it could be. On one side of the line and on the other. Take the origin for example. (-5,0) is the same distance away from the origin as (5, 0) is.

Absolute value is the absolute distance a point is from the 0-point on a line.

Graph of y=|x| looks like a V with the vertex of the V at the 0-point.

Absolute value removes the sign (±) and delivers just the magnitude.

The negative sign causes a change in direction. +10 is to the right of the zero on the number line....(-5) is on the left.

Going +5 units means you've gone 5 unites from wher you started to the RIGHT......going -5 units means you've gone 5 units to the LEFT.

The negative sign simply tells you which direction you've gone. The absolute value just says how FAR. No more...no less.

Do you see?

:)
