My sister lives in Tyler Texas and she says that they do not have basements there. They have "red soil". Well, I live in Ky, and we have "brown soil" and we DO have basements. So what about Texas dirt makes it unsuitable for basements?

In some areas, because of the freeze-thaw cycle, a deep foundation is required. This usually results in a basement being constructed as well. Since they are very expensive to build and are almost always a maintenance problem (water seepage); most homeowners would rather have the extra square footage built above grade. You can get a whole lot of square feet added if you can avoid the expense of a basement.
There are houses in Texas with basements, most are older homes that were built to northern specs; and, of course, if you live in a tornado-prone area you probably want some type of underground shelter.

Could be the water table is to high and a basement under a house would fill with water. With the humidity in Texas a basement would become a haven for mold too.

There are plenty of houses with basements in Texas.Depends on the area though how many.I live in the Texas Panhandle,right in tornado alley.So there are plenty here at least.

Theres alot of rain in texas .In some parts(south)cost is also a majer issue.The income is very low.I lived in Texas for awhile and some houses do have them.But again not alot in south.They have foundations that some homes are on due to flooding.

I think its just a matter of cost, since it isnt typical to have basemtents there, you dont need to have them to compete with other houses that do

oil three feet down.......?...water table.....every geological area has its differences.that lend our talents to make them as safe and structural as possible............in some areas a basement would always flood............so...no basements.....or one thats built like a ships hull...complete with bildge pumps.
