Matter is a material substance, and energy is an abstract energy,i,e,wind/gales.etc.Matter is a solid mass as in the earths core ,to move this would take an almighty force such as mother nature i.e.volcano .

the difference is that matter is the food that the animals eat say a caterpillar eats a leaf thats matter which gives the piller energy which is used up for excretion, keeping body temp level which uses up energy the left over energy is used for growth then a bird eats the piller that energy is transferred to the bird which then is used for excretion, body temp level there is less energy being transferred through the ecosystem because at each level energy is bieng used while the matter is consistant its food which the animals eat! hope this helps
