If you have a wireless card you should be able to click on the wireless icon and look at the available networks and connect to one. No additional software is necessary unless you want to hunt down obscure wireless networks in which case you wold need a sniffer.

If you have a wireless router connected to your internet connection then you can connect to that with no problem as long as your laptop has a wireless network card.

If you are saying that you want to connect to other peoples internet connection when you are away from your house, this is illegal. There have been people caught doing this that were sentenced to two years in jail.

The first question to ask you, is whether you have a PC or Mac. on a Mac, things are more simple to activate. on a PC, a little more complex. on a PC, you need to make sure that if you have a wireless card that did not come with your computer, get the correct drivers from the manufacturer's site, install, and then run the network "add" feature. if you have a Mac, the computer should recognize your card and activate it. all you have to do is activate the card on the menu bar.
