Before the 1960's there was no superbowl, there was the NFL championship game. The NFL merged with the AFL in the 1960's to form what is now the official NFL and created the superbowl. The bears have won 9 NFL championships, meaning pre-superbowl championships.

the superbowl has only been around for 40 years, feb. 4th will be superbowl 41. the bears won their 9 NFL championships before the superbowl existed. the NFL has been around since about 1920, but the superbowl, which started around 1967, was originally a game between the NFL champion and the AFL champion. you see, the AFL was a rival leauge. but then in 1970, the NFL and the AFL merged, into the modern day NFL. since then the superbowl has been played between the NFC (national football conference) and AFC (american football conference) champions. the NFC and AFC are both a part of the NFL
everyone else here keeps saying that the superbowl didn't start until after the NFL and AFL merged, but that is not true. the first 3 super bowls were BEFORE the merger. the 2 leauges didn't merge until 1970, after the AFL jets upset the NFL baltimore colts in superbowl 3

Back 40+ years ago there were two leagues.. the NFL and the AFL. So 8 of their championships came BEFORE the league merged. Before the Super Bowl was created in 1966, there was no "championship game" between the two leagues. So every year there was an AFL and an NFL champion. The Super Bowl didn't exist until after 1966, when the NFL and AFL merged and the NFC and AFC were created.

Actually your bringing up of the World Series is a prime example. The National League had been around for 25 years before they started pitting their champion against the newly formed American League champion in "The World's Series". The Baltimore Orioles won multiple titles in the 1880's and 1890's when that was the only "major league". Much can be said for the NFL. Only after the formation of the AFL in 1960, was there another "major league" football organization. Once those two leagues started pitting their champions against each other in 1967 did the "modern era" of football begin. Just as the modern era of baseball not begin until 1903. P.S. There was no pre-WS American league champion. And how did I miss the Vikings winning a championship. When the hell did that happen.

Back in the day (Before Superbowl I) the NFL and the AFL were 2 different companies. The bears were pretty dominant back in the early 1900's i think. So that's when they racked up all the NFL titles...before the NFL and the AFL merged to make an AFC & NFC which put together, make the NFL...
