Charities get money by soliciting donations - either in the form of money or items. This is done by simply asking on up to really fancy functions (dinner/dances/auctions/etc).

I'm going to assume that the various paid members of the charitable organization are paid in accordance with either the organization's charter, or by the limitations set forth by Federal Law.

charities dont make money ususally they are not for profit. but this does not mean the the people that work there do not get paid to administrate the money. all charities have to post there administrative percentages. most are on websites. if they have more than a 40% retention they are pretty worthless like unicef. look it up and see for yourself.

Expenses are first that includes directors. What is left is profit and a nonprofit organizaton can retain a 25% of profit to remain untouched. Left to cover extra cost. Yes! Charities make money but gives most of profit to programs sponsored.
