I'm writing a poem about Abraham Lincoln and I'm stuck.. More specifically, I'm looking for a word similar to "differ" for the word village, and "hero" for the word Amendment. Thanks soo much! :)

I don't think you can solve your problem this way. And I'm not sure how much we can help you since we don't know the exact content of your poem nor what poetic patterns you are using (what meter and rhyme scheme).

But I have a few suggestions about how you might look for ideas.

First, it almost never works to look for a word that has a fairly specific meaning AND that must rhyme with another specific word, especially if the second word is one that won't rhyme with very many things. And there are NOT very many words that rhyme with "village" or "amendment". (There isn't a whole lot other than "pillage", "spillage" and "tillage" for the first, and there really is no perfect rhyme for the second.)

Also, to correct an earlier answer, I urge you NOT to try coining words like "commendment". That kind of creation to make a rhyme work is occasionally appropriate for HUMOROUS verse, but I wouldn't touch it for anything serious. And note that "sacrilege" and "village" do NOT rhyme (mainly because the accent does not fall on the same syllable).

So what I suggest is that you try a number of possible ways to rewrite the entire line in which these two words appear.

1) You might simply find synonyms for the words that are easier to rhyme (e.g., "town" instead of "village" as has already been mentioned).

2) You might try to end the lines with completely different words and "hide" a tough-rhyme word like "amendment" somewhere else in the line.

3) I'm not clear whether the two sets of rhymes appear in the same stanza or not, but if they do, perhaps you can change the order of the lines. That would change things around so that, perhaps, the word related to hero might rhyme with village --or with "town" (as a subsitute for village)... for instance "[man of] renown"

4) You might try different FORMS of the words, looking for ones with endings that are easier to rhyme. For instance, instead of "amendment", use the forms "amend(s)" or "amending". Note how MUCH harder it is to find a word ending with "-endment" than one ending with "end", "ends" or "ending". In fact, for the "hero" idea you might find that something about one people commend or whose praise does not end (is unending)

5) Finally, as you work, do remember to try "near rhymes", not just perfect ones. In a perfect rhyme EVERY sound from the vowel of the accented syllable to the end of the word must be identical. A very good "near rhyme" often means, matching ALL the vowels and the final consonant sound or cluster, and coming fairly close on the other consonant sounds. So, for instance, "transcendant" and "resplendent", and a number of words that precisely rhyme with them, are decent near rhymes for "amendment".--since all the vowels match, and so do the consonants, except that you omit the "m".

your questions says you want rhymes but i think you might want synonyms?
sometimes its easier to change the words to fit easier rhymes. like instead of village using the word town, hmm a word that means differ but rhymes with town could be used like this for example

The disagreement between people
Seemed to bear down
on how outsiders saw the entire town

hope that could help

For hero, might I suggest, "person of commendment" Not exactly a true word....but it'll do under the rules of "poetic license"....

for trying to come up with a rhyme for "village"...might I suggest a phrase that is similar to "their words considered sacrelige" it's a good rhyme, although it is a little extreme....LOL

Namaste,

That thing helped me a lot. But I don't think there are any words that would help you there. You can always be the creative type who doesn't rhyme!
