"Great Expectations" is an excellent choice for just about anyone. One can't go far afield in choosing to read Dickens. In my opinion, he was probably the greatest author Great Britain produced during the 19th century. One of the things which made Dickens so great as an author was his choice to write about the common people and to focus on their problems, including their living conditions, in as realistic a way as possible. Consequently, many of his books come off sounding gloomy and depressive. But that's because those were the conditions that many of the English lower classes had to face during their everyday lives.

It is a very enjoyable book. Though it depends on what version of it you read the ending is not a classic Dicken's happy ending. Making this book one of is most pessimistic books, but as an optimistic person I truly loved this piece of literature. There are several movie versions as well, not just the modern day one. I have not seen this one, but I have seen the 1946 movie and 1999 Masterpiece Theater television version and both were remarkably close to the book. (Though of course things were adapted and excluded). All in all, if you like an enveloping love story, some moral battles, and a few gut-wrenching twists and suspense then I highly recommend Dickens' Great Expectations.

Great Expectations is an excellent read as are practically all books written by Dickens. You've probably read "A Christmas Carol." and enjoyed it but Great Expectations is a much better story if you have the patience to read and understand the old English language. It's dark--but it really is good.

I read it in high school because I had to. It was an enjoyable book, I'm not a big fan of Dickens so I wasn't too crazy about it. The book, from what I remember, is about a boy who falls in love with a girl WAY out of his leauge and then tries to the rest of his life trying to earn her love...I dont remember the end but I dont think it turned out too well for anyone. If you like Dickens I'd say go for it, there are def worse books to read, but I think there are better ones too.

I hated it with a passion when I had to read it in school. The only book I liked by Dickens was A Christmas Carol. His books were just so dark and depressing.

I know I'll probably get mobbed by Dickens's fans for saying this, but I found "Great Expectations" to be mediocre. Don't get me wrong, it isn't a bad novel by any means, but it didn't stay with me the way a great deal of other classic literature has.

Read it, it's great. You can feel the heart-wrenching unrequited love that Pip has for Stella. I read it in High school my freshman year. I think I made a poster to summarize chapter 21. If I remember correctly, there are some interesting twists and turns.

Very good book. There is also a movie that was based on the book if you don't want to read the whole thing (set in modern day times).
