What are some good 'cultural and avocational' interest to put on an applications? I know that avocational is something not related to your job. So, since it is a teaching application, I cannot write that I like to work with children or help children. I am thinking about writing scrapbooking but what are some others that I can put on the application? As for the cultural, I am a white female that lives out in the country... any ideas?

Since you live in the country - and this is just a guess - do you have a garden, or raise livestock (anything from chickens to cattle), do canning, knitting, crocheting, sewing? Your scrap-booking would be a good thing to put down as it can actually be utilized in your future work with children.

To me, avocational either means something additional you do besides your job that brings in money (a back-up money source/job) or is a 'survival' based activity that can translate into a marketable skill should the need a rise.

Avocation doesn't mean not related to your job. It means your hobbies. Very often your hobbies and interests WILL relate to your job, so certainly put them down. If you volunteer with any children's organizations or do anything with kids that you aren't getting paid for, list that.

In fact, you WANT to try to list hobbies that will be an asset to your career. Crafts, for instance, could be something you could share with the kids. Sports. Any instruments you might play. Writing or telling stories.

You will have better luck putting music preferences and hobbies like sewing. If you do not feel comfortable revealing that kind of information then put reading and club memberships like National Geographic Society. The worst mistake you could make would be leaving that space blank. That makes people very suspicious that you are a very boring person.

I would check out some forums where teachers seem to hang out. ask what they would look for in a person and maybe pass someone that you trust a stripped down version of your resume for them to review. I know that in the government sector, many gov workers are willing to lok at a resume before it is submitted.
