as for the images racing through the inspector's mind, was that just one possible scenario of a skeptical man, or did the crown prince actually murder the duchess?

Also, how did he make the orange tree grow?

It was a hoax to make it look like the Duchess was killed by the prince..and the orange tree was a mechanical pot..making it look like the tree was actually growing

Illusion.

The inspector figured out that the illusionist had faked the girls death, and he put together the scenario in his head.

If you look at the movie, you'll see when the inspector is looking at the book on the orange tree trick, it has a drawing of a mechanical device that makes the 'tree' grow.

The entire thing was set up! He didn't murder her. This was the only way the two of them would have peace of mind. The senerio running through the inspectors mind at the end, is what really happened.

Good Movie, better than I expected it to be

i think the images in the inspector's mind showed what he had figured out about what had happend.

i have no clue about the orange tree.
