Prices, please. or how do I find them out? I understand that gyms all expect us to ask and to barter for prices - but what can I expect to pay? I'd be interested in hearing about any two-person discounts I may receive. Thanks so much. I hope you can help.

The most expensive ones near me are £70 per month. The cheapest is £30.
The difference is the most expensive ones have swimming pools and you can use all the ones in that chain. The cheapest don't have pools and you can only use the one you are registered at. I could get cheaper by only going off peak (before 18:00).
You might be able to get a student rate, or discount though your employer.
Most will waive the joining fee which can be as high as £100.

The most expensive of the mainstream variety is definitely Virgin Active (aka Holmes Place). I just quit my membership there and it was £98 a month but it also meant I could use any HP in Europe. They will do slight discounts for introducing someone else but you're only talking a few quid a month so it's not overly exciting. Cannons isn't bad.....is about £50 a month, you can use most of them and a lot of them have pools however they tend to be pretty crowded. I would probably go for LA Fitness or Fitness First cos they are both pretty cheap (about £40 odd a month), they have loads of classes and there are loads of them in London. Bear in mind there is so much competition in London for membership these days so you can take a few liberties and knock them down a bit....the latter two will be the best in this respect so I'm sure you can walk away paying £30-35 a month each. My personal recommendation is don't bother with gyms, do a lot or running and cyclying and go to a park and do loads of press ups, sit ups and pull ups. Trust me, the results are way better and it's free

It is unclear if you are planning to live or just visit London. Here is a tip. IF you stay at the St. Giles Hotel (tube Totteham Court), you have free access to the London YMCA which is the largest gym in the city. The St. Giles is a moderate tourist class hotel generally rated at 3 stars, minutes away from the West End, (the Dominion Theatre is a 2 minute walk) and close to the British Museum and the Bloomsbury area. Oh ya, you are 2 minutes from Oxford Street and some of the best take away food in the city.

If you join Pru Health insurance you can join a cannons or holmes place gym for £25 per month. My health insurance is £19 so all in all it's £44 per month. They also sometimes have an offer when you get the first 6 months of the gym free - bargain! Also, whenever you cancel the health insurance your gym is automatically cancelled - so you avoid getting sucked into a year's contract.

Have fun!
