Here is what I do and never a problem. For a desktop, you have to take the left side panel as you look at it from the front. Then if you look at the side of the drive and back you will notice cables in the back. If you try to pull your drive out, it may be blocked by one of the screws sticking out. Well there should be a hook by the screw which you pull at the hook slightly to let the screw head pass under. Then when you have the room you will pull of the power plug cable first. Then you will have room to pull off the long flat cable that goes to your processor. EASILY pull it off. It is on rather snug now. Then you just pull the drive easily out.

You have two long plugs on the flat cable of them. The one on the end is the Master and the one below it is the slave. Now the trick is when you put another Disk Drive end read the instructions carefully. There is a small retangular one half inch hole with , I think 5 pairs of pin. The instructions will tell you which is the master pin and which is the slave pin. Reason being, if you put two drives in and the small pin connector is on the slave pins on BOTH drives then you will have only one drive show up on the screen. The instructions tell you which one to switch too. They are all in the same position for all drives. That is the slave and master pins are in the same location. So whenever replacing a drive make sure the replacement drive has the same pin connecting as in the old one.

Are you sure you want to do this? If so, you may want to write down these instructions since you won't be able to use the computer while doing this. I f you want to take it out physically, then turn off computer and unplug. Then open the computer case, keep one hand on the case so static electricity doesn't mess anything up. Now there are usually 2 to 3 connections. write down or make a sketch to remember where they go. There is a flat cord that goes to the motherboard, a plastic one with lots of wires that goes to the power control, and sometimes a small one that goes to the motherboard for sound. Disconnect all these from the drive itself. Next depending on what kind of computer case you have, you may need to take off the front of the computer case. Next, unscrew the screws that hold the drive in place. Now it is either going to slide forward or backward depending on computer case. That's usually all there is to it.

Turn the computer off and take the power lead out. best to wear a anti static wrist band but you can discharge the static by putting your hand on the power supply case before touching anything else inside the box. Unscrew (if screwed in) the hard drive. The hard drive will have two lead attached. One to the power supply and the other to the motherboard. Remove them both and lift out. That's it.

different computer towers have different ways of opening them up. tell me what make and model you have and i'll tell you how to open it before taking out the drive but if you know how to open it then follow the directions given by the other guys. it pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
