If a person has committed three relatively minor offences he could end up with a harsh sentence- is that right though??

I think that the 3 strike system is somewhat of a deterrent, especially when it comes to drinking and driving. As far as other criminals, nothing is going to stop them. If they want to rob, sell drugs, kill they are going to regardless of any system. I do not believe we are hard enough on criminals. The punishment should fit the crime but because of overcrowding in prisons a lot of pedophiles, murderers, drug sellers are released to make room. Since they know that, there is not much incentive to become law-abiding citizens.

I don't think it's harsh at all. In fact, it's pretty lenient when you stop to think about it. A criminal is given three chances, basically, with each succeeding offense making him or her vulnerable to an ever-increasing penalty. If one doesn't shape up after the third offense, the legal system has little sympathy for that offender, and he or she deserves the ultimate punishment allowable under the law for that offense. One time should actually be sufficient, not three.

It isn't in effect in all states. Depending on the crimes, it could be a deterrent. If not a deterrent, at least it gets the repeat offenders off the streets so those of us that are law-abiding can be safe.
