Use "male genitalia" or "male genitals" for "penis". You can also use "phallus" for penis. If you have to refer to testicles - use "testes" (plural). Singular is "testis".

However, "penis" is not a bad word, and you shouldn't be afraid to use it - it's the correct word! It's only bad if the person referring to the genitals must hide coyly behind immature and silly euphemisms for something that is a part of nature!

By the way, good luck with the essay!

I think that the word "genitals" is the commonly accepted phrase in most situations. Although, if this is a college paper, then using the proper name for each part of the genital anatomy would not be inappropriate. For example, you may need to single out the difference between the attention to detail in the testicles as opposed to the penis to show the artists fascination with potential rather than accomplished fact (since a sperm is a potential human, not one in actuality). In this case, using the proper names for each area is quite acceptable.

Hope this helps. Good luck on the essay.

Probably penis. Or...you know, penis. Oh, and penis might be good, too. If you're writing an essay, I'm pretty sure the people reading it are gonna be older than two years old.

Penis. It's the correct word, and you won't get in trouble for using it in an art paper. Good luck.

I would avoid saying that. I would say something like "because the romans were very modest, the nude sculptures were fitted with carved fig leaves" or whatever. but don't say they were covering up weiners and stuff.
