I bought a red-eared turtle 2 weeks ago and his eating habits were just fine. Now he's stopped eating and hasn't had anything to eat for 5 days now, and he has also been awfully lazy. What should I do? Please RSVP.

Red-ear sliders need a few basics:

Space- aim for 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length.

Heat- keep the water between 75-80F, and the basking site about 90F. You cannot keep the water warm enough most of the time with just a lamp or something so get a decent tank heater with thermostatic control.

Light- Besides a heat lamp for the basking site, turtles also need UVB light- bulbs are available at any good pet store. If it does not brag about UVB, it does not offer it.

Make sure his water is clean and warm. Also make sure he is getting enough warmth from the UV light and that he is able to get up out of the water to rest under the light. He may need vitamins, however, he may have brought a virus with him from where ever you bought him. If he doesn't act better in the next day or two, you may want to take him back to the store.

P.S. Red-eared sliders are are hard to take care of as they get older. I had one for three years and he out grew three aquariums. He was very dirty too, I had to constantly clean the tank, even with an expensive underwater filtering system.

Do you have a proper set-up for him (water to swim, area where he can get completely out of the water, heat lamp)? What food are you offering and where are you putting it?

TAKE HIM TO A VET... TURTLES DIE VERY SLOWLY..IF YOU HAVE NEVER OWNED A TURTLE BEFORE.. DO YOUR RESEARCH... THE NEED SPECIAL LIGHT. A ROCK TO BASK ON, SPECIAL FOOD.... DO NOT RECOMMEND AS PETS... SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE.

Get him to a vet(seriously). he could be just chilling or he might be sick, and reptiles go downhill FAST.
