I need to think of a last name for a family who has extremely bad luck on their vacation, and then at the end have a really good time. What would be a good name for this family?

The following names may be useful to you:

Mally, Malory (and other spellings) - "Luckless"
Camden - "Disagreement"
Durjaya -"Hard to conquer"

If none of these names really suit your need, you may consider going to FreeTranslation.com and looking up the words "unlucky," "unfortunate," and other synonyms in different languages. You may find a word more appropriate for your story there.

"Mallory" does indeed mean "unlucky", so on the surface it seems to be perfect.

BUT if I understand what you're doing, none of your readers is likely to KNOW that the word means this, which rather kills your point.

Might be better simply to use something that SOUNDS like it could be a name and means what you want. Perhaps "Luckless" (which sounds a bit like "Lovelace") or "Hapless" could work?

One other problem -- leaving the name the same AFTER their fortunes have turned around at the end is a bit awkward. Perhaps there is a more ambiguous or open-ended name you could use? How about something like "Hazard" (which has to do with risk, chance, danger... but not necessarily turning out bad)? Or "Hap(p)", which suggests things that 'happen' by chance, but doesn't necessarily mean the outcome is good (as in 'happy') or bad (as in 'mishap').
