My two top choices for a new fish would be, a betta fish, or goldfish. Just about the cheapest you can go is with a betta fish. Their beautiful and very inexpensive. The down side to them is that they are agressive and two males cant be kept together, You cant have a male and female either. You can keep them with fish that look completely different from themselves but if you betta is more agressive than most he wont do well. To house a betta you need a bowl (8 dollars), gravel (4 dollars), a plant(1.99), the fish (4 dollars), net (99 cents), food (2 dollars), and water conditioner 3 dollars.) So we're looking at 20-30 dollars here. Their very easy to take care of, but often can be a little boring. Mostly because people keep them in bowls. It all depends on your bettas personality.

Another good choice would be a goldfish. They aren't meant for bowls though. They will need quite a bit more room and can grow very large so at least a 10 gallon for 2 is recomended. The bigger the tank the more you can have though because they can share each others space. Their are crazy people that will tell you goldfish need 30 gallons each but they are crazy and mistaken.
Goldfish essentials:

10 gallon tank package with hood, lights, and filter: 30 dollars at walmart.
water conditioner: 8 dollars
gravel: 8 dollars
plants: 10 dollars
2 medium goldfish: 10 dollars
food: 5 dollars
net: 4 dollars

so we're looking at 50-80 dollars depending on where and how you shop. goldfish are the most entertaining and enjoyable fish i have ever had. My favorites are the calico telescope eye goldfish.

I have read that mollies are quite enjoyable but reproduce a lot. They might be a good alternative to goldfish for around the same price, except you will have more since they dont need as much room.

Why dont you go to the store and browse, then reserch the one you like the most. I think chichlids are beautiful. Thats the kind of fish i want next.

Oh just remember:

go by the one inch of fish per gallon rule. Take into account how big the fish will get! goldfish can get to the size of a softball.

go for shorter longer tanks. you can stock them heavier because their will be more oxegyn in the water.

bigger really is always better when going for aquariums. Mistakes are more easily fixable in a large aquarium. Get as large of one as you can afford. But remember the price can get pretty hight when you go too big. My 55 gallon has cost me 500 dollars to set up. It was worth it though. A good size for you would be 10-30 gallons.

good luck!

Hi If you are interested in getting fish, first of all you need to think about the size of the tank - whether you have a lot of room or not, and whether you want cold water fish (gold fish) or tropical ( I am assuming you are not into marine fish!!! - way too expensive for me!!!)

I have three tanks set up at the moment, and have a variety of fish. I would say that the easiest and cheapest fish for you to start with would be a siamese fighting fish. These fish are absolutely beautiful, and can be kept is a relatively small tank as they need to be kept on their own - due to their name, they will fight with any other fish except a female fighting fish. They are fed on flake and granule food twice a day, and as they are kept on their own need relative small amount of tank upkeep. As long as you dont overfeed them they are easy to keep clean!!

Another nice idea would to start with a tank of guppies. These are tropical fish, and are beautiful coloured small fish which are extremely easy to breed and to keep. They are quite a hardy fish and look good in large numbers in the tank.

Good luck!"!!!

Betta fish - definitely the easiest to take care of.
They only require a small tank or bowl and they don't need any kind of filter. They are VERY pretty, come in many colors, and are $5 or less. (Only disadvantage - can't put more than one together)

I suggest you go with a fighting fish (betta) as they are easy to care for. DO NOT get goldfish. They produce a lot of waste and die easily if not properly cared for.

Tetras. They are beautifully colored, peaceful and will get along with most other fish (especially other tetras, mix the colors). Buy a couple at a time and you won't empty the bank account.

try a goldfish, siamese fighter (betta) or some guppies to start with - ask advice from your petstore on feeding and water conditioning. research on the internet too. before you buy
