I need to get it into a Y= format to complete the rest of the question, but I can't remember how. It's been years since i did this stuff, so even a point in the right direction would be great!

Thank for your help in advance

really, you divide both sides by x^2

y = 8/(x^2)

by the way, i think some of the people below me thought that there were two y's in your equation when one of the y's was your "solve for y" part. next time you ask, you might want to rephrase your question as, could you help me solve for y? the equation is....

even i had to read your question twice to make sense of your grammar.

First, divide both sides by x^2.

y*y=8/x^2

Now take the square root (sqrt) of each side.

y=sqrt(8)/sqrt(x^2)

Now this is simplifiable. The square root of x^2 is obviously x, but 8 is a tad more complicated...you want to change it to the square root of (4 TIMES 2). Since 4 is a perfect square (i.e. It has a square root that is a whole number) you can pull it out of the radical (i.e. the square root symbol) as a 2. I will now show this.

y=sqrt(8)/x
y=sqrt(4 TIMES 2)/x
y=2sqrt(2)/x <---Final answer!!

You have the following:

y*(x²)*y = 8

==> y²*x² = 8
==> y² = 8/x²
==> y = ±√(8/x²)
==> y = ±(2√2)/x

divide both sides by x^2
so it would be y= 8/(x^2)
