Virtually all of the suburbs are safe, as is most of the city. There are hotels within walking distance of the 'L' stations at Rosemont, Cumberland, and Harlem (the first three stops in from O'Hare; Cumberland and Harlem are technically in the city, but the neighborhoods are very suburban.). From there figure about 45 minutes to the Loop. (It will be shorter if everything goes perfectly, but...) Rosemont and Cumberland are both big park-and-ride stations, and there are many cheaper hotels a short drive from them. Several hotels are also a short drive from the park-and-rides at Forest Park (the other end of the blue line, about half an hour west of the Loop) and Skokie (on the yellow line, west of Evanston, about an hour from the Loop). Another option is Oak Park, where the historic Carleton Hotel is just steps from the Harlem/Lake terminal on the green line.
Numerous Metra commuter rail stations are near suburban hotels. Among those I have stayed at are a Super 8 in Mokena that is within walking distance of the Hickory Creek station, a Sleep Inn and a Comfort Suites in Tinley Park that are about a mile from the 80th Avenue station, and a Sleep Inn in Naperville that is a short drive from the Route 59 station, and a Comfort Suites in Aurora that is adjacent to the Aurora terminal.

Rosemont is the suburban hotel hub of Chicago and i live right nextdoor in Des Plaines.
Rosemont is almost entirely composed of hotels since it is practically attatched to the airport and the CTA stop that will take you directly to Chicago.
Any hotel you find in Rosemont or Des Plaines will be close to transportation and is totally safe. The train ride to the city is short and will take you directly there. Any other siburb will be a bit less convenient to get there.
So remember...Rosemont or Des Plaines and the Train line you would take to the city is the BLUE LINE. The blue line starts at the airport, then to rosmont, then off to the city.

Would need more details to answer this question....if you are flying in, check out hotels near whichever airport you are flying into. O'Hare has a number of hotels in the area that are in the price range you are looking for. South of Midway airport there are a number of hotels in one area that are reasonably priced as well. You can always catch a shuttle to the airport at Midway and catch the Orange Line to get downtown. The same goes for O'Hare airport as well except you would take the Blue Line into downtown.

Aurora. Home of Wayne & Garth.
There is a nice hotel RIGHT by the Metra Station on Broadway st. with train leaving every 20min or so to get you to the city just north of the down town area. The casino is across the street, a really good restaurant next door. You can't beat that.

you might be able to afford harvey or dixmoor for 600 bucks a month. seriously though you arent going to find anything for 600 or under in chicago that is in a safe neighborhood nor are you going to find anything for 600 or under in any of the suburbs that are safe. apartments around 71st and halsted are going for like 1300 a month and that is a one of the most crime ridden neighborhoods in the city of chicago. im not trying to sound rude or anything but you see 1300 being a low end price in a bad area just imagine what 600 would get ya.
