virus is an infection where someone writes a program that will enter your computer and damage your files until your computer burns up. Adware/Spyware is a program written that attaches itself to a file or files in your computer to force it to perform the function the other guy wants - it mostly redirects you to a site for advertising and selling stuff. I just switched to Window Live One Care as it protects and maintains you computer. It is free for a three month trail and then you buy for $49.95 which is about the same as any good program. You find it at Microsoft.com. I have found it to be much much much better than Norton Anti-Virus which had been the #1 program. Norton had become my big brother and would not let me do the things I wanted to on my computer and every update had mistakes until one froze my computer and I had to reload. I had been mad at Norton for years.

Spyware may consist of programs that "Spy" on you. They get the info on what web sites you visit to popping up ads on you computer without you wanting them.

A antivirus programs detect and delete or quarantine virus, from trojans to data miners. Virus in your computer may crash it, put a pranster message that you have been busted on your screen, key loggers virus, which may report to the sender all the keys you type and these would include passwords, data miners, to overload you system with useless data and slow down your computer to various others. Viruses are bad and no good period.

The best programs are a matter of speculation. Like asking which is the best diet program. They all work but then a matter of taste. I use PC PITSTOP program. This is a one time charge and it will configure max settings for your machine and get rid of spyware and erroneous files too. There are other programs that do the same but you have to pay to renew every year. I use Nortons cuz it is good and cheap. I have not any problems with viruses yet.

FYI, watch it with the so called "Free" programs. They should be called "Trial Version" programs. Some will scan for free like AVG and my PC Pitstop, but then you need to upgrade or BUY the programs to delete the bad files found by the FREE SCAN. AVG though has a free 30 day trial with full benefits before it downgrades to the cut version.
