The heaviest diamond ever found was the "Cullinan Diamond" found in 1905 at the Premier Mine in South Africa by Mr.Frederick Wells who was the mine superintendent at the time. It was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan who was responsible for opening up the mine and who was also visiting on the day it was found. The weight of the stone was 3,106 carats.
An interesting fact is that the stone was not a complete crystal but only part of a crystal that had been broken in some past time. By calculation the part which had been broken off should weigh at least the same or even heavier than the Cullinan itself. Who knows? - one day the other part will be found by some lucky miner at the Premier Mine.
