I don't really know how to explain it but the sound is like if you are trying to open a large file or running a lot of things. It sounds like the harddrive is working (not a spinning sound). Most older computers do this. My computer is only about 1 year old and I have plenty of room on my HD. It has started making this sound even when it is asleep. Nothing is running and in the middle of the night it will wake me up with this sound. It is not a lound sound but I still hate it. Anyone know what causes this?

The best way to describe the sound is the sound when your computer is starting up and you can hear the HD or whatever is making this sound working. This is not a fan or speaker sound...

Well if you computer is on in the middle of the night when it makes the noise it could simply be any number or automated processes working without your knowledge (even more so if you have an active internet connection). Because hard drives spin, some faster than other they create noise and depending on the hd used some create more noise because they arent insualted enough, if the sound seems like something is perhaps grinding then you really have a problem, but if there were major hd problems then you would notice more than the noise. My advice would be to check to see if you have any anit-virus or automatic updates scheduled or check for spyware or viruses.

Your hard drive could be the problem, or not. Most hard drives have a long and prosperous lives. However, some of them die at an early age. I know the sound to which you refer, but all I can tell you is to open the case and reboot the machine. If it is the hard drive you will know it. If not, look elsewhere.

If it is the hard drive, it may or may not be bad. Maybe all you need to do is to defragment your files. This noise you hear could be because the drive is having to bounce all over to get the data that is necessary to do the operation that the computer is trying to perform.

Impossible to say because your description of "strange" noise is not clear. Is this a noise from a fan or from the hard drive? Is the noise coming from the speakers? What does it mean "more like I'm checking my email?" I don't know of an "email checking noise." Yes, it's very hard to describe a sound, but try...

You could try and defagging. Or explain how old the computer is because your harddrive could be trying you it`s on its way out, you may what to back up some of the data just in case it does die on you.

The only mechanical part in your computer is hard drive. It has probably worn out. Having a lot of space does not mean your hard drive is new. Change your hard drive.
