No I do not believe either are the case. Colin Powell backed out because he is too Republican for the Democrats and too liberal for the Republicans.

Colin Powell never formally announced that he would run for President. Instead of running for the Presidency, Mr. Powell chose to keep his personal life, his family, mainly his wife, a private matter.
Senator Obama, a brilliant man, (and would make an excellent president) I personally regret to see him make this bid for President. I feel that his life would be in danger. Just look at the hatred on this questions and answers forum. However, I do understand that any coward can sit in their home and spew hatred from a keyboard. One just might act out on their views, and actually do something to harm the Senator.
Senator Obama has a beautiful, intelligent wife, she is an attorney, and two beautiful daughters. I do not want to see him run, ( it would take a toll on his family) and I do not believe that he would win. The United States is not ready for a President of color.
Senator Obama's grandchildren (if they inherit their intelligence from their grandfather and grandmother) will stand a chance at running for President, and winning, and not having it cost their life. That scenario is about 40 to 50 years in the future, and by then, hopefully all the hatred that is so prevalent in the United States will be gone, or at least minimized.

Colin Powell's wife asked him not to run.
Obama will self destruct before anyone can threaten him.
I believe that Presidents are not at risk unless they offend the Gun Lobby.

Its been a long time since a president more controvversial than George Bush has been president. He had no problems.
The USA has the best security in the world for its president.
Powel may have been threatened but I'd be shocked if anybody dared. He is held in high respect.
If Obama wins he will be far safer than you or me, from threats.

I believe he declined after saying it'd put too much strain on his wife and family.
It's possible that Obama will be assassinated if he becomes president, but that's a possibility with anyone.
