There have been some studies done over the years that does sometimes indicate that individuals with cognitive or physical disabiities tend to have similiar hand dominance; however, I don't believe there has ever been a direct correlation. I know working with some kids with mental retardation that they have a hard time establishing hand dominance and may alternate back and forth for specific tasks.

When it boils down to it....I think the baggers are all coincidentally left-handed.

A lot of people with Mental Retardation (and before you yell at me that is the politically correct term I am a Special Education Teacher) Also suffer from motor skill delays.

Often you find that people like this won't have a preferred hand. They have difficulty doing what we call "crossing the mid-line" Meaning that they cant reach for something on their left with their right hand crossing their bodies. This therefore causes them to use what ever hand is closest to the object that they need to reach.

So it could be just a coincidence that they are all left handed, or it could be where they stand to bag the grocery's, or it could be the way that they learned to bag the grocery's and they stick with their left hand. It would be interesting to see what hand the person who trained them used.

A lot of grocery stores hire people who may have special needs.
It is a wonderful thing for both the employee and the community.
Bagging groceries is something that many people with special needs can do and it makes them feel great to have a real job. Not to mention the paycheck. Many people with special needs come from families that may not so easily carry the burden of having to financially support someone through adulthood.
Why are they all left handed?? I honestly don't know!!

Handiness, is not a part of any type of handicapping condition. More likely the person demonstrating a task to them are facing them using their right hand. The challanged person is imitating exactly what the see.

As a person who has worked with special needs individuals for twenty six years it is important your you to see your observation as a unique skill. Noticing the unique learning skills of special needs persons is a difficult skill to master. If you have not yet chosen a profession consider Occupational Therapy.

It's just "the luck of the draw" that they are all left-handed.

Maybe they are related to each other, like quadruplets.
