I'd make them spank the back not the front. they'll learn that on their own.

To wooleybooley I am a Mormon born & raised. I had a few spankings during my childhood. So don't go there!

Now for the answer to the question: I don't think that spanking is child abuse, but I do believe that a pissed off parent could make it abusive. I saw on TV one time where a mother spanked her child and didn't stop! One or 2 good swats on the rear isn't abusive though.

No it is not. California is trying to pass a new law where it is illegal to spank a child. That is the biggest load of ******** I have ever heard. Spanking works better than telling them to go to stupid "time out" When you spank them for doing something wrong, they know not to do it again because they know what the consequence is gonna be.

I am not a 'hitter.' Frankly, I can tolerate a 'swat' if a child reaches for something on a hot stove; or reaches into a fan. However...I am concerned that a lot of questions on Y/A are from S&M-type folks who 'get off' on bare-bottom spankings of their children. That is not good! Get your spouse to consent to a 'bare bottom spanking.' If your spouse enjoys it; and you 'get off' on it; then everybody is happy! And you do not have to involve a small child in your "pleasure!" The small child will appreciate this, as well!

Oh I beleive in a good spanking! U mean what bigger ones spank the littel ones?? I dont think thats a good idea. But a good slap on the behind never killed anyone, my mom did it, I didnt like it, so I pretty much behaved that is until I got older and was very rebellious!

IMHO... I think it would be. Factors going into my decision of saying yes to the question of whether forcing (aka making) a child to hit themselves is abuse include:
(1) I have seen self destructive children... it is not a pretty sight. You cannot assume that the child will not hurt his/her self bad enough for it to be considered 'abuse'. Abuse is physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional.
(2) Would not the main lesson in that be to beat yourself up (literally) when you make a human age related error of which there are many in a child's formative learning years?
(3) Children, like all animals, look to their parents to teach them how to survive in life. The child who becomes comfortable with any form of beating in their home, will likely pass that on to their children, then they to theirs, etc.
(4) Can a child make a mistake so horrendous that the points listed above become worth physical abuse?

I think the issue becomes self control of the parent and a deficit in parenting skills. I assume the questioner's parent's spanked them. If so, then the questioner's own life situation would prove my point.

And finally, we are human beings. We are learning continually. I know, from my own experience, that we screw up in parenting. There is very little perfection in life or parenting.

lol Of course not. You referring to the idiotic law being proposed in CA for no spanking up to age 3 aren't you? They are probably Mormon. They refuse to spank-their kids are the worst in the USA.

No. My kindergarten teacher used make the class spank each other on the hands with rulers. I don't consider that child abuse. It was just weird, because she was the only teacher who ever did that.

According to California, spanking a child under the age of three is a crime and it can land you a year in Jail and thousands of dollars in fines.
