Dubya refers to the "w" in his middle name, which is used to differentiate his name from his father's. I think it may also be a way for people who don't like him to present him, and perhaps also people from the south in general, as uncultured and stupid because of their tendency to slur their words.

Instead of Junior, they took the W. for his middle name and used it to distinguish him from the Big Guy.
And, since he's from Texas, I guess the slurring of it works nicely.
Wouldn't work so well for someone we respected more, I'd bet.
