I am doing a history essay on the genocide of Rwanda.
One of my points centers around why the United Nations did not send any troops/enough troops to Rwanda in order to stop or assist in stopping the genocide.
I need to know what the United States' sphere of influence is, and how they relate to the UN (In decisions being made, what happens etc.). If anyone can give me an answer, and a source for my essay it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time! :D

I was also wondering what was happening in Yugoslavia at the time that required more attention from the United States?

look back into the actual start of all the troubles in Rwanda..you will see its NOT all about the latest flare up................I remember all this BS going on when I was a kid of about 10 and TRUST me the UK did send in UN troops and we took a HUGE amount of them as refuges into the UK..........very much the old adage of the USA really does not hear about whats happening in the outside world very much.

I would also look up about Sierra Leonie [sp] at the same time more people are being killed there then have ever been killed during Rwanda's spats

The United States is only one of five countries (who were the victors in WWII and still apparently share in the spoils of war) in the world that can stop a resolution in the United Nations dead in its tracks, through its elite veto.

As for Rwanda, I suggest you watch the movie, "Hotel Rwanda." It is very stirring and telling.

Perhaps this Wikipedia article would be useful to you. It includes a section about the US role too.
