I seem to have the ability to know about past events that I have never lived. For example, I was writing a story that took place in the 1960s (I was born in 1974). In the story, I mentioned an underground garage band I had heard of and wrote in the story that they played on a specific date in 1967, in a specific town. Then, when I researched the info (and I had no prior info about this band other than their name and some of their music), I found out that they played a concert on that date and in that town, exactly!!! This has happened several times to me, and it's beyond being coincidences. Is there a name for this - or does it fall under the category "psychic"? I'm curious. Thanks in advance for all answers!

I feel you are very psychic and have known this for quite sometime. Whenever you had wanted something whether it be a ring or just simple information about someone; you would get it through the energy you are able to psychically interpret and project.
The term that you are describing is called "paramnesia" which means either you have experienced this in a past life or have spiritually visited this particular period in your psychic eye. How strong the feelings are is how you interpret whether you actually lived the part or are just sensing it.
Meditation will help you a great deal in refining your gift and it just takes a few minutes per day and doesn't involve anything fancy if you choose. Just close your eyes and connect with your inner spirit and converse with yourself internally, this will greatly enhance your special gifts even more and allow more visions and feelings to come into your conscious mind.
I pick up from you that you have lived many times through many different eras the most prominent being the Victorian era somewhere around 1837 and later years. I am not sure if you were exactly royalty but you did belong to a family of noble stature. This is why you like things in your life just so-so. It's not being picky but just the way you prefer things as you did in your past life.

There are actually a few ways you could be receiving information about past events. One is past-life regression. That is when you see the information from a first person perspective in such vivid detail that the only way you could have known the fact was through firsthand experience in a past life. Another way is channeling. This way, you get sensations, or segments of information from another source, such as a spirit that lived in the time you are getting the visions from. The third and most likely way, is that you did learn the 'unknowable' information subconsciously from a source while your attention was on something else, like if you were reading a book with the TV on or something like that. In that case, your mind will reprocess the info in such a way that you seem to be experiencing an event when in actuality, it is only your subconscious integrating the information. I have had this happen to me several times while taking a nap with the TV on or while someone was having a conversation in the room. I would 'dream' everything they were saying! Cool, huh?

J is one of the most common letters to start a name, so it's a lucky guess trick. N is very uncommon except for women. They are using the self-fulfilling prophecy, assuming you will actively seek out someone with a J-name. After August comes by, it's not their fault and they don't care. Mentalists almost always start with J as a guess. The name thing is one of the better cons in the world. Usually it's done about family members like what John Edward does on his speaking to the dead show.

Yes you can, you are already doing it. Don't doubt your abilities. I can't give you a name for it, other than being psychic.
Perhaps it would be easier to accept that you can do it and get in touch with others who have the same abilities or similar.

No, It may fall into category of Recarnation, but it only happens too children in many cases.Knowing something that you don't know could be from a past life.
