I think you are right. The US Civil War actually solved very little for the freed slaves at the time. The North did not fight for the end of slavery, it fought for the preservation of the United part in the United States. If the North had not won, I doubt either side would still be free. We are not yet today completely free, but we are ahead of most of the rest of the world.

i imagine a much extra effective parallel might want to be between the aftermath of the yankee Civil conflict and the yankee subjugation of the Philippines. Emancipation for the African-individuals at abode in 1865, and invasion, career, subjugation of the Filipino human beings, and "benevolent" imperialism overseas.
