I don't think that throwing money at the problem will solve it long term. What happens once that $5 we give for one meal is gone? What happens once a person is cured of AIDS, but still has no food to eat or place to live?
We need to demand from our government that they spend at least as much on feeding the poor and housing the homeless as they do on warfare. They can do this if they want to, and if we demand it.
When we understand money and where it comes from, we could begin to understand how they could take care of everyone if they wanted to.
And once we each realize that we are all equal, and that we would not want to be hungry, homeless, or naked, then we will begin to see others as ourselves.
There is a site that all you have to do is sign your name--just be a voice. That's it. Their website is www.wwunited.org. I think it can work.

I know that as one individual I cannot do a lot, but I CAN do what I am able to do---one of the easiest things available to do right now is sign my (our) name(s) to the declaration of intent of the World Wide United Foundation (ww.wwunited.org).
This website is about ending world poverty and inequality in just ONE day, by using the systems that are already with in place within most governments, but specifically the US government. They are not asking for money or donations, they do not have anyone on payroll--all they are asking is for people to sign their names to their declaration. It is so easy and yet so few have signed. I have gone through the whole website and know it can work, if they could just get us, "the people" to use our voice to influence our leaders. So I started by signing my name and now I will go do whatever I can as an individual to help my fellowmen, knowing that there is a plan in place that will work for everyone if given the chance.

helping just one person will really make a difference. you can't end poverty but you can ease the suffering those in your area feel from it.
collect all the blankets and clothes no longer wanted by friends and family put them in a big box and take them to a homeless shelter in your area. help in a shelter serving meals helping pass out donated stuff.
stand up and voice your concerns at the next city council meeting
become an advocate by giving a voice to those who's voice's society no longer hears. anything will make a bigger difference then sitting there wondering what you can do.

Here's something I really like (but it may not be your bag of rocks). I dig bloodwater missions (www.bloodwater.org). The premise is that for what we consider a realitively small sum of money people working in Africa can produce fresh water for those in the grips of the most crippling poverty. The reality is, we can't really even think about addressing the larger issues such as malaria, aids, etc. until we knock out basic clean water.
For like $10 you can provide clean water for someone for a year. It's a very small thing and yet it is an incredibly large thing. Check them out.

We need to find a way to take care of all the world's poor and disenfranchised, one person can't do much alone but together, we the people, can change the hearts and minds of the world. When people really come to understand that EVERYONE is their brother and sister then they will embrace the way to end this mess. I've heard of a group that feels like this too. They have a website www.wwunited.org

Envision them with enough to eat. Envision them happy. It is the single most powerful action you can take to help others. Also, focus on all the billions on this earth who are fed and living well and be grateful for that. Never feel sorry for someone else - you only make them feel uncomfortable and "less-than." Think about it - do you like when people feel sorry for you? Or when they think you are not enough or that you don't have enough?
