Oh yes, they most certainly can. The most common lawsuit is for copyright infringement, but authors can also be sued for libel and misrepresentation. It really depends on the nature of the subject matter you intend to write about as to what your dangers would be, and it's advisable to have an agent for your writing, someone that will examine your manuscripts and let you know what materials you might want to consider editting.

well just to ease your mind get lots of insurance then why worry. but from what i hear a author can be sued for any use of exact words from anything copyrighted hay ask a lawyer and your publishers will make sure they are covered as well ...jump in just go for it it will work out get that pen moving and quit worrying silly

You can get sued for plagarism - stealing someone else's story.
You can get sued for invasion of privacy - putting someone's personal information (home address, phone number, medical records) in the public without their written consent.
You can get sued for intentionally and knowingly presenting false information as true.

It's unlikely that you'll ever get sued. Don't worry about it.

Authors can get *sued* by plagarizing someone's work. Plagarizing is copying off of someone else's work.
They can also get sued for Libel. Which is Slander, only in print.
