Valery Kharlamov is widely considered among hockey historians as possibly the greatest hockey player ever, most who had seen him play think he was even more skilled than Wayne Gretzky. He had explosive speed, was renowned as one of the all time great stick handlers, possessed a wicked slap shot, and had amazing vision on the ice. He was without question the one player all the Canadiens feared during the '72 Summit series, every player that played in that series would likely say he was the best player in hockey at that time. he was killed very early in a car accident (if i remember correctly he was 32 or 33). Tretiak was a dominating goalie and the best known in Canada and the U.S. so he gets most of the talk as the best, he was great and likely a top 3 or 4 all time but check out some of the skaters from the Russian dynasty of the 60's and 70's. They really were amazing.

Vladislav Tretiak Goalie for Russia and played in the greatest series of all the 1972 summit series. Canada vs Russia, Canada won. he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens but never was allowed to leave his country to play in the NHL.

Erich B>>>>Francis "Frank" McGee died September 16, 1916) was a legendary ice hockey player during the early days of hockey for the Ottawa Silver Seven. McGee won 3 Stanley Cup's with the Ottawa Silver Seven.

Frank McGee was dead before the NHL was ever founded, NHL founded 1917 the year after he died.

Herb Carnegie. He took Jean Beliveau under his wing when they were with the Quebec Aces (basically a minor league team back in the 40s and 50s), and even Beliveau admitted that Carnegie was a better player than he was. The only thing that held him back was because he is black. Sad, but true.

look at the entire roster of the russian team in the 1972 summit series. they were good, (good enough to finish second), and none of them played in the nhl.
